Our own couple session!

I've been very lucky to have found great friends in the photography community here on island. Two of those friends are Amber and Kylie. A few months back, Tommy came home for a quick week and they offered to joint shoot a couple session for us! I can't possibly express how priceless photographs are to a military couple. When Tommy is away and we are out of communication, they are the only visual piece of him that I have. I find myself looking at printed photos from our wedding and our life in Hawaii all the time. To have those moments and emotions frozen in time is simply put, priceless. I will always ALWAYS believe that photographs are perhaps the greatest investment a couple can make.

Check out Amber (www.schyne.com) and Kylie's (www.kyliemartinphotography.com) work! They're really talented film photographers in the Hawaiian islands!

Sunrise with my pup, my husband, and I.

There are few things that we enjoy more than a sunrise walk with our dog, especially during the winter. I could go on forever about Hawaii during the winter... beautiful breezes, light sweaters, warm afternoon sun, and just enough chill to cuddle up in a blanket at night. We've always been winter people, even in Alaska and Wisconsin. When I think of winter mornings cups of hot coffee, throwing on the boots to nab the crinkled news paper off the snowy porch, and warm blankets comes to mind. It's wonderful. And anytime we can experience even a fraction of that, we appreciate it! Not that we don't like sweating our faces off constantly during Hawaii's summers or anything... ha.

Huffington Post!

I am so flattered to be featured in a Huffington Post article about the affect Instagram has had on professional photography. I'll leave most of the talking up to Huff Post blogger, Kait Hanson, but I'll say here that Instagram is one of my favorite things. Apps such as Insta and Pinterest have really piqued the public's interest in good design and beautiful photographs. I spend time each day on these sites, myself! It's an amazing place to meet new people, share common interests, gain inspiration, and bloom creatively. That being said, there are a few draw backs for today's professional photographer... (you'll just have to read the article to find out!)

fall/winter shapshot

I have quite a few shots from fall and winter that never made it to the blog. Mostly because I've been too busy working and shooting said photographs to add them! They did make it to instagram and facebook but that's about as far as they've gone! If you've been following along on social media, I've been experimenting with film photography these past few months. Most of these shots are film processed at Richard Photo Lab, a few shot with my trusty Nikon. I still can not get over the feeling of wonder while exploring new spots. It reminds me of childhood... next blog post: 10 steps on keeping the "wonder" in your travels. (Hah, just kidding. Sort of.)

Lovin' on the fruit stand

So, I have this local fruit stand on the north shore that I am in love with. I go back all the time. Visiting these old ladies is an event I write out in my calendar! The colors and flavors... I could live off of them forever. (It does help that they're perched next to my favorite secret beach with my FAVORITE tree in all of Hawaii.) Here are a few film shots from a day Moe and I went exploring! I'm going up there this weekend again and I can't wait!

Lanikai Pillbox

I've been toting my film camera around every where lately! This time to the pillboxes in Lanikai at sunrise. To my groggily pleasant surprise, sunrise does indeed arrive later during the winter. I used to set my alarm for 5:30am for this hike. Thank the Lord that wasn't the case with last week, ya know?

P.S. Here's a small after thought- I LOVE how after posting this on a few facebook film forums, I had people who knew exactly where I was without my mentioning it! That's the glory of Hawaii... it's such a small island with such a power to move and change people... simple hikes become lifetime experiences that you never forget! (And boldly recall on Facebook to strangers!)
